As this is my first blog tour, I’m really excited to be here and share my new children’s book, Space Dust, with you. Thank you, Nicola, for hosting me today.
Written under interesting circumstances and very little time, the book came into being after a chat with my local librarian. I met with her to enquire about starting a children’s writing workshop at the library. She, on the other hand, wanted an author to do reading sessions during the Summer Reading Challenge held over the six-week school break. With little hesitation, I agreed to do the story telling but thought, how much fun would it be to read a book that follows the theme of the Challenge? Hey presto, the book suddenly became an idea, a seed waiting to be planted. With less than two months to write, illustrate and publish the book before the Challenge began, I could feel the pressure of trying to create a book that would accommodate the wide age range of children attending the library events. Boring sentences containing vast amounts of information on space just didn’t work!
After my first attempt, I decided the best thing to do was ask the children at my school for feedback. What better group to do that than my Book Club! Ruthless and honest, they tore the book to shreds, leaving me feeling rather deflated. The book had to be scrapped.
After a gruelling day of teaching those delightful critics, I mentioned my epic fail to my son and one of the teachers passing my desk. In no time at all, we had a brain storming session and came up with various plots, themes and character profiles ready to entice even the strictest young critic. With new ideas fighting for prime position, I went home and started writing numerous drafts of the book, each one different in their attack but not strong enough to call them good.
Then, it happened. The dream. It whispered and whimpered in my sluggish brain, singing rhymes and telling tales in the early hours of the morning. I woke up with Little One’s voice crystal clear in my head; Big Ox’s bald patch shone in the sun in my mind and their story began.
